A reflection of thyself

It's a really weird feeling when you're told you have a certain quality that you didn't think you had before.

Take me for instance. I don't think so but quite a handful of my friends have told me that I'm really really independent. Not that I'm boasting because I think its total rubbish. I don't feel I'm independent. I don't know what to do most of the time. I stumble. I fall.

However, them telling me got me thinking, looking over my past actions to come to a conclusion that I may be independent after all. It's just I've never realised it. I could hold my own against most things thrown my way. I think I won't be able to survive life in a boarding school but I'm actually having a blast there. I rarely (because no one can do everything on they own. That's why we have organisations) depend on others to help me with my assignments. I don't need someone to push me to do the things I know I have to do. It's necessary and if I don't do it, who will? So just maybe, maybe I am independent after all.

The whole point of this post (yes I do have a point to make) is to persuade YOU to listen. Listen to what others think of you. Reflect. See if it's really true. And change if necessary but keep if it's a positive thing. You may know your needs best but the one who knows you best is the people around you.

Disclaimer: This entry is written by Afifah (not me!) in her Friendster's blog. Thanks for the reminder kiddo. We 'old' folks really need it for time to time I guess! =P

For my part, I'd say me choosing to go for boarding school last time did influence me in a lot of ways, good and bad (though of course I do hope the former outweighs the latter.. hehe).

It prepared me quite a bit for university, but still university life is nothing like I imagined when I was in boarding school. Independence and trust in yourself are simply a must.

It's so easy to get carried away, and another important thing I discover during this phase of my life is just how essential it is for me to be proud of my own faith, and to take up real efforts to achieve that.

Salaam..

You're right.. You've got to listen to what others have to say about you because sometimes you just don't see it in yourself. However, I don't believe in changing yourself to please people, but you should change yourself for your own sake.. for your own good.. and to improve yourself as a person.

It's good that you're independent ;)

It's good that you finally acknolwdge one of your plus points. The difference between a confident person and a not-so confident person is that the former knows what his strengths are.

As for me, I acknowledge the fact that I possess a certain quality known as 'height'.

p.s. That disclaimer of yours made me feel old indeed.

'independent' a word that is very subjective.

lets say malaysia gained independent49 years ago. its just the form of governing body but the fate and path taken by our country is still guided by others. we are in commonwealth and aid was given for our obedience.

as individual, one will decide for his actions. how about parental influences?
lets say a reporter is financially independent but what about his work? isnt it the editor decides on the policy which is determined by the shareholder.

maybe we can just say that most of us are partially independent.

what is importantis that, some of us are more matured, confident, persimistic and rely less on others. They are not afraid to express their thoughts, felling and opinions. they are more outgoing and handy at all times. its just like the 'mac gyver' personality, a survivor.

I think you are very independent in the sense that you know when you are suppose to on your laptop, when you have to read your thick university books, when you can go and watch a movie, when to ask questions, etc.... Talking about asking questions, I remember the classic question you asked when you were about 6 yrs old - Macam mana Dr Mahathir bilang berapa orang ada kat Malaysia?. And you have your own answer for that. It was so unbelievable from a six year old!!!
Keep it up and be a good example to your siblings. :)

hello afie... my sincere apology for not visiting your blog for a LONG TIME. I didn't even know that you have changed to blogspot. I only found out when i clicked your link at ayumi's page... oh, i have been a very bad friend, eh.
Well, it is good to know that you finally agreed with your friends. Yes, our friends can usually tell our strengths, our weaknesses, our habits and whatnot. Just remember that when they point out your strengths, be thankful for you are blessed with those strengths and when they point out your weaknesses, try to find ways to make 'em less of a weakness and more of a strength.
